On his way from Bangor to Bobbio, Columban and his companions arrived at the Swiss border in Basel. Welcome to the Swiss-Austrian-Liechtenstein section of the European Columban cultural route Via Columbani .
The path through the Switzerland-Austria-Liechtenstein area offers hikers an extremely attractive variety of cultural and natural offers.
The journey very often follows rivers (Rhine, Aare, Limmat) and lets you enjoy the river landscapes in all their facets. Two larger lakes (Lake Zurich, Lake Constance) offer opportunities either to be navigated by ship or to hike along their banks.
The hike provides interesting insights into history , as there are impressive witnesses, especially from Roman times, along the way: Augusta Raurica (Augst), Vindonissa (Windisch), Arbor Felix (Arbon), Brigantium (Bregenz), Curia (Chur). Paths that the Romans laid out are used (excavations near Schaan in FL, Septimerpass).
Of course, there are also cities to be crossed where it may be worthwhile to stay (Basel, Zurich, St. Gallen, Bregenz, Vaduz, Chur). And the charming places that make the way a series of attractions are almost innumerable.
